How Much Does Etsy Actually Take?

By the Sellfy team · Last updated: June 2026

Fee rates sourced from Etsy’s published seller fee policy

Etsy sellers pay fees in layers. Each layer is small on its own. Together, they can consume 11–15% of every sale before you’ve covered a single cost of goods. Here’s what each one is and how they stack.

The Etsy Fee Stack

Every sale on Etsy triggers at least three separate charges. The listing fee is $0.20, charged when you publish a product and each time it renews. The transaction fee is 6.5% of the total sale price, including any shipping you charge the buyer. The payment processing fee is 3% + $0.25 per transaction for US sellers using Etsy Payments.

Together: 9.5% + $0.45 per sale. On a $25 item, that’s $2.83 gone before you’ve covered materials or time.

Etsy raised the transaction fee from 5% to 6.5% in April 2022. Sellers with more than $10K in annual revenue face an additional Offsite Ads fee of 12–15% on ad-driven sales and cannot opt out.

How the Math Adds Up Per Sale

The fee stack doesn’t feel significant until you do the math at volume.

At $25 per sale and 100 sales per month: Etsy takes $2.83 per sale. You keep $22.17. Across 100 sales: $2,217/month, $26,604/year.

Sellfy charges no transaction fee. Payment processing (Stripe) costs $1.03 per sale. You keep $23.97. Across 100 sales: $2,397/month, $28,770/year.

The gap is $180/month. That’s $2,160/year. That’s the fee difference before you subtract $240 in Etsy listing fees ($0.20 × 100 items × 12 months). Sellfy Starter costs $264/year. The fee savings pay for it 8× over.

Etsy Fees at Every Price Point

$10 $1.40 $8.60 $0.59 $9.41 +$0.81
$25 $2.83 $22.17 $1.03 $23.97 +$1.80

$200 $19.45 $180.55 $6.10 $193.90 +$13.35

Etsy fees: $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 payment processing. Sellfy fees: 0% transaction + 2.9% + $0.30 Stripe. Excludes Etsy Offsite Ads fee.

When Etsy Makes Sense

Etsy’s marketplace traffic is real. If you’re launching with no existing audience, Etsy can surface your products to buyers actively searching for what you sell. For handmade goods, vintage items, and craft supplies, Etsy’s category intent is hard to replicate.

The calculus changes once you have an audience. Once buyers know your name, once you have an email list, once your social following drives traffic, Etsy’s fee stack becomes a recurring cost on revenue you generated yourself. Every sale through Etsy hands over 9.5%+. Every sale through Sellfy hands over 0%.

Many sellers run both. Etsy for discovery; Sellfy for direct. The numbers in the calculator above show the margin difference on your specific products.

Selling Without a Marketplace

Linda Skuja started selling crochet patterns in 2011. Those same patterns still earn today. Etsy would charge 6.5% on every single one of those sales, forever, regardless of when the product was made or how little work it takes to deliver. On Sellfy, the transaction fee has always been 0%.

Sellfy handles the store, checkout, file delivery, and the receipts. Linda doesn’t manage a marketplace algorithm, bid for visibility, or worry about listing renewals. She sells digital downloads directly to the audience that already knows her work.

What Etsy Actually Takes From Each Sale

How much does Etsy take from a sale?

Between 9.5% and 12%+ depending on whether Offsite Ads triggered the purchase. On a $25 sale with standard fees: $0.20 listing + $1.63 transaction + $1.00 payment processing = $2.83, which is 11.3%. Add the 12–15% Offsite Ads fee on top and a single sale can cost you $5.63, or 22.5% of the sale price.

What is the Etsy transaction fee?

6.5% of the total sale price, including any shipping you charge the buyer. Every completed sale. Etsy raised it from 5% to 6.5% in April 2022. It cannot be waived or negotiated as a seller.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the total buyer payment, including any shipping you charge. If you charge $5 for shipping on a $25 item, Etsy takes 6.5% of $30, not $25. That’s an extra $0.33 per sale that the standard fee calculation doesn’t show. Add your average shipping charge to the price input above to include it.

Does Etsy charge a fee just to list items?

Yes. Every listing costs $0.20 when you publish it and auto-renews every four months, whether it sells or not. A shop with 100 active listings sitting unsold for a year pays $60 in listing fees before a single sale. Digital products that never expire still trigger these renewals.

How do I calculate my Etsy profit?

Sale price minus: $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% of sale price (transaction), 3% + $0.25 (payment processing), and your cost of goods. The formula: profit = price × 0.905 − $0.45 − cost of goods. The calculator above does this automatically.

Is Etsy worth it for sellers?

Etsy provides genuine marketplace traffic. That matters most when starting without an audience. Once you have repeat buyers or a following elsewhere, the fee stack (9.5%+ per sale, mandatory Offsite Ads over $10K/year) costs more than a Sellfy subscription, and Etsy owns the customer relationship. You can’t email your Etsy buyers directly. See our list of Etsy alternatives for a full comparison.

FAQs

Are these fees accurate for 2026?

Fee rates are sourced directly from Etsy’s published seller fee policy, updated June 2026. The calculator uses Etsy Payments US rates (3% + $0.25 per transaction). Rates vary by country. UK sellers pay 4% + £0.20, for example. The Offsite Ads fee is not included in the default calculation since it only applies to ad-driven sales.

What’s the difference between the transaction fee and the payment processing fee?

Two separate charges. The transaction fee (6.5%) is Etsy’s cut for using their marketplace. It goes to Etsy. The payment processing fee (3% + $0.25) covers moving money through Etsy Payments, similar to what Stripe or PayPal charge independently. Both apply to every sale. Neither cancels the other out.

How does Sellfy compare to Etsy fees?

Sellfy charges 0% transaction fees on every plan. You pay only the payment processor. Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30; PayPal rates vary. On a $25 sale that’s $1.03 versus Etsy’s $2.83. Sellfy is subscription-based ($22–$119/month billed annually). For sellers doing meaningful volume, the math shifts quickly. See the table above for the side-by-side at your price point.

Can I sell the same products on Sellfy that I sell on Etsy?

In most cases, yes. Sellfy supports digital products — PDFs, patterns, presets, SVGs, templates, fonts, music, video — with instant delivery and 0% transaction fees. Physical products and print-on-demand are also supported. If you sell handmade physical goods exclusively, Etsy’s marketplace discovery may still have value alongside a Sellfy store for direct sales.
