1938 Travels in France and Geneva

Mildred Ethel Lindsay was 58 years old and her daughter Margaret 17, when Margaret was invited to stay with the Comte and Comtesse Cibein in their chateau near Lyons in order to improve her French. The trip was organised by Mildred’s French friends Mr and Mrs de Guingand who lived close by in Croydon. Mildred decided to go on a tour of eastern and southern France during that April of 1938, and it is her Journal that is reproduced here in this booklet. Her words paint a picture of life in this part of France during the year preceding the beginning of the Second World War.
