Short stories and poetry are two very separate genres in the vast world that is literature. Within each genre there are tools and techniques used by the writers to excite, entertain, move, motivate, and provoke thought, from their readers. Everyone of us respondsdifferentlyto these techniques, we all have our own thoughts and insights on the subject that the writer is portraying.Writers tend to write about particular event that have occurred in their lives or the lives of people that they know with great and colorful detail in order to allow their readers to experience those same highs and lows and all the emotions that they or that person experienced the time it was happening. Peoplesdifferences make their interpretation of written works vary in a wide degree from one reader to another and from the author and the reader. However, the greatest writers are able to convey their works in the way that they want them to be received. Such is the case of Dylan Thomas’s “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” and Jean Rhys’s “I Used to Live Here Once”. You can understand the theme of their writings from the opening lines, you can feel the emotions and they paint death and impermanence in a way that speaks to the readers in a way that is not spooky or downtrodden.
