SOC313-SB1070 Research Paper

Senate Bill 1070, also known as the Support our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, is a piece of legislation that originated in the early months of 2010 (Chin 2010). Despite this bill passing and being in effect for almost a year now, there is still a significant amount of controversy surrounding it. While the social movement is comprised of those trying to pass the bill, it is important to consider the other side of individuals who oppose it. The SB 1070 bill originated in Arizona as a result of public outcry for reformation of anti-illegal immigration laws. Many supporters of the movement believe SB 1070 is an important act that will address several relevant state issues such as the increasing Hispanic population, drug and border related violence and the ineffectiveness of current federal immigration regulation (Archibold and Steinhauer 2010).
