The Freedom Riders were sent across the South to challenge the Supreme Court’s 1960 decision in Boynton v. Virginia, which outlawed discrimination in bus terminals.
It was a test to see how the South would react to the court’s decision against Jim Crow laws, and was another step in a trend of civil disobedience that had begun with the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
