One channel that is used for business communication is written communication. “Written communications, include memos, letters, fax transmissions, e-mail, instant messaging, organizational periodicals, notices placed on bulletin boards (including electronic ones), and any other device that transmits via written words or symbols” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 6). The advantages of written communication are that you have a reference or documentation something that can be used to verify later on if needed. There will be no hear say or misconceptions of what has been said. The disadvantage is the time it takes to construct a written message. “You could convey far more information to a college instructor in a 1-hour oral exam than a 1-hour written exam” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p.6). I tend to use written communication when I am working such as emails more than just picking up the phone. The programmers I work with speak a language that sometimes I think they may not understand what they are talking about. So I tend to send emails which help me to get my point across with attachments if necessary and I have a record of what they are saying instead of trying to decipher myself. In the end written communication definitely works and makes my job much easier as I try to relay information to other staff members.
