Effective verbal and written communication skills are vital to one’s personal, professional, and academic success.  Oftentimes, communicating effectively can prove to be a challenging task which is not easily overcome for one reason or another.  If one’s communication skills are not developed appropriately, he or she will not succeed in the workplace.  “To be an expert communicator, you need to be effective at all points in the communication process – from "sender"… to "receiver", and… comfortable with the different channels of communication – face to face, voice to voice, written, and so on” (MindTools.com, 2014, para. 2).  Only those associates who exhibit strong, advanced communication skills are selected for promotions; employees with inferior skills are often overlooked due to their weak communication skills.  In order to conquer communication gaps and succeed personal, professionally, and academically, senders and receivers alike must assess their communication skills, taking note of any weaknesses, and develop a plan to improve upon these areas.
