As for why they are deemed criminal or social all about your culture and how and where you are raised.  For instance, in many Middle Eastern and African countries, it is still customary to slaughter and sacrifice animals, where as in the US, this would be deemed a criminal act.  This is because here in the States, many of us grow up with pets and over there, most animals are used for survival.  You can also see this switch in Asian countries, where those same animals we raised as pets are the easiest or most accessible meat and they will eat dog and cat.  When you base your laws off of this, it will lead to incarceration.  Here, we love our steak, but in Northern India you can be imprisoned for killing a cow under their religious based cow protection discourse(Adcock, 2010).
