HUM 105 Week 1 Foundations of Mythology
Write 150- to 200-word responses to each of the following.  This is a short answer assignment, not a paper.  Just copy and paste the questions into a MS Word document and type out your answers.  Support your responses with examples from the required readings.

How is the word myth used popularly? For example, what does the statement, "It's a myth" mean? In contrast, how is the word myth used in the academic context? After considering the definition in your textbooks and course materials, write a definition in your own words.
Why do myths from different cultures around the world address such similar or universal themes? Think about how myths explain the unknown and the tribulations of mankind.
What is the relationship between mythology and religion? Where do mythology and religion intersect? Where do they diverge?
How would you defend mythology's relevance in contemporary culture? Think about familial and cultural traditions. Also, consider how mythology is used in the arts and in advertising to typify human experience.

The Creation Death and Rebirth of the Universe from Northern Europe (from World Mythology)
Write a paper with a minimum of 700 words addressing the following:

Which world or worlds, such as sky, earth, and underworld, are represented in the myths you chose? What are the elements of these worlds?
Include the role of cosmic occurrences or natural phenomena, such as celestial bodies, floods, rain, wind, and fire.
Based on information from Myth and Knowing and the categories of creation, describe the style of creation (e.g. secretion, ex nihilo, etc.).  Explain why the style of creation is significant to the culture that created it.
Why do you think cosmic or creation myths are important to a culture? What value do they bring, if any?
Compare important features of your two myths.  Explain major similarities and differences between the creators, the style of creation, and the purposes of these myths in their respective cultures.
Important:  Do not simply summarize two myths from the readings.  Read the myths, understand them, and use specific details from them to address the required elements above.

1.     Using the specific roles from the first part Chapter 3 (Goddesses as Literary Archetypes) or Chapter 4 (Images of the Masculine), describe the divinity’s role in the myth you chose.

2.     Within the myth, how does this divinity interact with or compare to divinities of the same gender and to divinities of the opposite gender?  How does their role (from question 1) influence how they interact? 

3.     What are the divinity’s attributes, such as divine powers or characteristics?  How do these attributes align with their role and their gender?

4.     Identify a character (fictional or real) from our modern culture that fills a role similar to each divinity and explain why you chose each character (You should choose a different character for each divinity).

Choose a contemporary story in the form of a novel or movie that is inspired by a mythological epic or journey of a hero's quest.  Choose from one of the following:  Star Wars: A New Hope (1977),  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Hunger Games (first book/movie), The Matrix (1999), or Batman Begins (2005).

Create a 10- to 15-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint®presentation about a contemporary hero or heroine's quest.

Identify the main character (hero)--the feat(s) he or she must execute for the benefit of society in the face of challenges. 

Identify the villain and describe his or her characteristics and role in the hero's quest.

Identify other character archetypes (see Character Archetypes link to the right) within the story anddescribe these roles in the context of your contemporary hero.  If the link to the right doesn't work, copy and paste this link into your web browser to understand these archetypes:

Identify in detail each of the steps the hero takes in the quest: Separation, Initiation, and Return as described in the Stages of the Hero's Journey link to the right.

Identify one hero myth from the Week 4 readings and explain how this hero is similar to your contemporary hero. 

Discuss the conflicts between personal desires and community responsibility represented in the myth and the contemporary story. Relate these to the conflicts and choices ordinary humans struggle with. Explain why these human conflicts retain relevance through the ages.

Format your citations and references consistent with APA guidelines.  Make sure to include comprehensivespeaker notes.  Speaker notes, the space below your slides, should explain the images and bullet points that you include on the slides, and they would serve as the "script" during your presentation.  Since I cannot hear you present this information, make sure that your speaker notes cover all of the information that you would want to present in a face-to-face presentation.

Choose a topic for your paper from one of the following:  World Trade Center in New York, Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., Independence Hall in Philadelphia, or Ellis Island in New York.

Explain the historical significance of the location.  Note:  This is not a history paper.  Only include enough historical background to set up the rest of the paper.

Use information from the Week 5 readings to explain how/why this place also functions as a sacred location

Identify any sacred objects or attributes associated with the location.

Compare your location to a sacred place from a myth.  How are they similar?  How are they different?
