What is a hero? What can he/she do that ordinary people cannot?
 

 

Choose a contemporary story from the news, a novel, television or movie that is inspired by a mythological epic or hero’s quest. Describe the behavior of the main character and the feat(s) he or she has or must execute for the benefit of society in the face of challenges.
 

 

Identify the villain and describe his or her characteristics and role in the hero’s quest.
 

 

Explain the conflicts between personal desires and community responsibilityrepresented in the story. What sacrifices does the hero make in personal life? Relate these to the conflicts and choices with which ordinary humans struggle.

What characteristics of tricksters does this character have?
 

 

What are the motives?  Helping someone, enriching self, adventure, self-protection? Are the motives ethical and fair?

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation about a sacred place in mythology, for example, the Oracle at Delphi or the Mahabodhi Temple. This place should currently exist. Imagine this presentation as being like a travel guide book, letting someone from outside of the culture know what to expect to find if he or she were to visit the place of mythical value.

Create a 10- to 14-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with detailed speaker notes. The use of images is encouraged.

Where is the sacred site located and from which culture?
 

 

What are its mythological origins, history, and functions?
 

 

Describe any sacred objects and attributes associated with the deities and mythological origins of this place.
 

 

Compare this place to those that serve similar functions in other cultures, for example, mountain tops, temples, burial sites or memorials, and so on.
 

 

Discuss the relevance of this place and these objects in contemporary culture,  What significance do these places or things hold in the minds and emotions of the people? How do these places or things connect to mythological stories from that culture?
