Week9 - Environmental Sustainability Paper

Glass is a mixture of large amounts of silica that comes from sand, and is combined with smaller amounts of soda (sodium bicarbonate), and lime from limestone. All of these elements are naturally occurring. The glass is made by fusing the silica, soda, and lime together at very high temperatures. They can also add other substances in during the process to add color to the glass and to also change how sparkling the glass may look. Old or broken glass called “cullet” is also recycled into the mixture. After the glass is heated it is then cooled and then formed into the shape that the glass needs to be (“How is Glass Made”, 2011).
