In cognition, one major area of discussion is the influence of nature and nurture. What is the concept of nature-nurture, and why is it important in the study of cognition?

Using the book for this class: Galotti, K. M. (2014). Cognitive Psychology In and Out of the Laboratory (5th ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: SAGE. Answer the following questions.

1.3 Discuss the importance of behavioral observation in cognitive psychology.
1.4 Explain the role of the brain in cognitive functions.

PSY 360 Week 2 Discussion Questions

1. Attention is quite obviously a cognitive process. How is attention directed, and when directed, does one's focus toward something mean that something else is no longer attended to by our attention?

2. If the phenomenon of texting, versus talking to a fellow passenger, versus talking on a cell phone differs - how does it differ?

3. Using two kids, looking at the same picture, why would one see 17 different colors, and the other 5?

Our main text, (Galotti, 2014) does provide material here for us to use.

Both chapters in our readings this week discuss some points on this question.

4. Visual perception is complicated because people's cognitive systems are not adept at analyzing visual stimuli. To resolve visual ambiguities, people make unconscious assumptions that resolve the ambiguities. What are some examples of visual ambiguities that you have encountered today?

5.What type of cognitive assumptions did you make to solve them?(Contiuation from question above)

6.As you have read in this week's readings assignment, perception involves identifying things through one's senses. Unfortunately, each of the senses can be impaired. Discuss how perception can be impaired.

7. Explain some methods you can use to cope with these impairments.(From question above)

One of the 'themes' emerging with some of the posts is that of perception.

This is an area our main text goes into great detail about.

For example, "The common assumption underlying the models of perception we have examined (especially the top-down models) is that the perceiver does something to the proximal stimulus" (Galotti, p. 57, 2014).

8. How does our text approach this idea of perception?

Week 2 Assignment One Minute Paper

2.1 Explain the relationship between attention and cognition.
2.2 Analyze the role of perception in cognitive psychology.
2.3 Discuss the importance of visual perception.

Week 2 Assignment Phineas Gage Paper

This is an essay that will directly demonstrate key ideas for students of cognitive psychology.

Resources: University Library, Electronic Reserve Readings, the Internet, or other resources to conduct research.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper in which you explain the role of the brain in cognitive functions. As a part of your explanation, describe what Phineas Gage's accident revealed about how brain areas support cognitive function. Students will need to cover the following –

·         Explain the role of the brain in cognitive functioning,

·         Provide examples of how certain areas of the brain support cognitive functioning,

·         How does Traumatic Brain Injury factor into the story of Phineas Gage?

·         Which areas of Phineas Gage's brain were destroyed due to the accident and how did this severe injury factor into the subsequent changes in Phineas? Provide plenty of course material to support this change.

Format your paper consistent with APA grading guide.

Please review the APA sample paper for more on this.

PSY_360 Week 3 DQ

1. As discussed in the readings assignment for this week, sensory memory is a general term used to refer to sensory buffers that can retain a large amount of memory, but only for a short period of time. One type of sensory memory is iconic memory. Can you think of a time when you used iconic memory? If so, how did you use it?

2. Forgetting can occur as the result of many different types of actions--for example, you may not have the correct cue for retrieval--but there are some individuals that would argue that forgetting is an intentional act and that, in order to forget something, one must make a conscious effort to do so. Do you support this reasoning? Why or why not?

3. Reflect and discuss our text and ERR reading material regarding the role that emotion plays regarding memory.

Do you agree with the material regarding emotional memories?

4. For example - can you remember what you were doing when catastrophes occurred (for example, the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, the Challenger disaster, assassination of John F. Kennedy, or even local disasters)?

5. Using our main text, and/or ERR readings what does our course material have to say about this specific type of memory?

6. Personality type (for the curious navigate to http:// humanmetrics. com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp) also plays a critical role. Take five minutes and share what your type is with us! You may find that it has a direct impact on how each of us processes emotional content!

PSY 360 Week 4 Discussion Questions 1 & 2

1. Reflect on the structure of language and discuss the following: As discussed in this week's reading assignment, language structure is important in cognition, but is it really? For example, if a child said to you, "You, me, cookie, go now, hurry," you would know what the child meant, even though what is said is not grammatically correct. How is that possible?

Reflect on the critical periods of language acquisition and discuss the following:

2. One of the concepts discussed during Week 4 is the critical periods of language acquisition. Is there a critical period for language? If so, what might this imply about learning multiple languages in school?
