Models of staff development

Introduction In spite of this recent intense, widespread interest in staff development, much remains to be learned about the process. This article organizes what is known about effective staff development into five models currently being espoused and used by staff developers. A review of the supporting theory and research on these models is followed by a description of what is currently known about the organizational context that is required to support successful staff development efforts. The conclusion discusses what can be said with confidence about effective staff development practice and what remains to be learned. First, however are definitions of the key terms and a description of the literature that is used throughout the article.
