Developing a strong understanding of mathematical vocabulary provides students with a solid foundation to build knowledge and skills to master the mathematics curriculum. Systematic and strategic opportunities for communication with peers and with the teacher will support the development of math language proficiency in our students.
This teacher handbook is intended to support teachers by helping them to:
- target key mathematical vocabulary at their grade level
- better understand sample strategies and supports that teachers can use to help students engage in math vocabulary
For example, to achieve success in mathematics, students must:
- read and understand specific operational vocabulary in order to solve problems in context
- understand the meaning of math words
make connections between concepts to develop a deeper understanding
