Developing a strong understanding of mathematical vocabulary provides students with a solid foundation to build knowledge and skills to master the mathematics curriculum. Systematic and strategic
opportunities for communication with peers and with the teacher will support the development of math language proficiency in our students.
This document includes grade-specific mathematical vocabulary organized by the strands from the Alberta Mathematics Kindergarten to Grade 9 Program of Studies (2016) the Alberta K – 9 Mathematics
Achievement Indicators (2016). Words that are highlighted are new to the grade and an asterisk indicates that students may not use these words specifically, but teachers could introduce it.
This teacher handbook is intended to support teachers by helping them to:
● target key mathematical vocabulary at each grade level
● better understand sample strategies and supports that can be used to help students engage in mathematical vocabulary
For example, to achieve success in mathematics, students need to:
● read and understand specific operational vocabulary in order to solve problems in context
● understand the meaning of mathematical vocabulary
● make connections between concepts to develop a deeper understanding
