The White Wife is often spotted by a lone male making his way past the Loch of Watlee in Shetland’s most northerly island, Unst. ‘White Wife’ also happens to be the name of one of the many fine ales of Britain’s most northerly brewery, the Valhalla Brewery. Unst fiddler and prolific composer Steven Spence has written a great reel on the same subject. I have to confess that having only experienced the beer, Steven might be a greater authority than me on such matters. However, surely his tune ‘White Wife’ and my tune ‘Da White Wife’ go some way in paying homage to both the ghost and the extremely delicious beer!
