Arizona Unit 33 has a very good herd of Whitetail deer. Unit 33 has a reputation for giving up some very nice bucks. The most successful hunters are going to be the ones that put in their time scouting. This is only a four day hunt and you may only get one decent chance at a good buck. Think "remote" when planning your strategy for this hunt. There are lots of hunters and only four days to hunt.

The early season usually sees the bucks in the lower parts of the canyons where the vegetation has greened up from the recent monsoon season and the cover is generally thicker. Concentrate your scouting and hunting around the moist canyon bottoms that look greener than others. This is not to say that you should ignore the peaks. Summer rains are widely scattered. One canyon might have received little to no rain all summer, while a nearby canyon received several inches of water. These are the areas that attract deer during drought conditions. There seems to be a good crop of acorns this year in some places. Look for stands of Oaks that have a good mast crop during your scouting trips. These will be deer magnets later in the year.
